COVID-19 spread declining, but complacency will expose us to a second wave. Says Dr. Al Khal

We are now past the virus peak in Qatar. However:-

There has been an increase in positive cases among Qatari nationals and expat professionals such as engineers, doctors, and teachers. Hmmm… too much socializing me thinks.

Sailiya Central Market likely to reopen on July 1st

Spanning over 78,000 square meters, the Central Market which is Qatar’s largest wholesale center for vegetables and fruits, has 102 retail shops and 50 wholesale stalls, in addition to 52 stalls selling traditional products such as handicrafts.

Vegitable and fruit vendors as well as a large number of farmers have been eagerly awaiting the reopening. However, there is concern by vendors that if the market only opens for the planned 5 days a week. They will experience issues with perishable goods, which have no refrigeration over the two day period when it’s closed.

Hamad Port Container Terminal 2, to be operational by the year-end.

The 403,500 Square Meter container terminal, known as CT2 is on track for becoming operational at the end of Q4 this year. CT2 which has a berth length of 1,200m and a 17m draft alongside, will have an annual capacity of 2 million TEU’s which are 20 foot equivalent units.

The Ministry of Education publishes the 2020 to 2021 calendar for public schools. Staff are to return to schools for the academic year on August 19th. Ready for the first day of the academic year which will be September 1st. Only just enough time for teachers outside the country to return on August 1st and serve their 2 weeks quarantine.

Now, let’s take a quick look at the numbers for yesterday’s COVID update – Which shows 1,176 new positive cases. 1,545 recoveries and I’m very happy to say, no deaths.

Active cases are now 17,979 meaning a decrease of 369 in the previous 24hrs period.

That’s all for today, please take care, and I’ll see ya tomorrow.
