The Qatar News in around 60 Seconds – Friday 5th June 2020

It’s Friday 5th of June, this is the news in 60 seconds

Today marks 3 years since the illegal blockade of Qatar began. Not only illegal, but as has been 100% proven, totally unjustified. All the papers are packed full of stories marking the occasion. I can’t read them all. So I’m going to give my opinion to cover the anniversary instead.

Firstly, and most importantly I have to mention leadership. Because from the get-go, the decisions our Amir made, without hesitation quite literally saved the day. Panic buying lasted just a mater of hours before everyone realized the supermarket shelves were remaining full. The impact of the blockade was hardly felt, because of the amazing amount of work going on behind the scenes.

Secondly let’s look at support of the people. Not one… not one I promise you. Not even one person I know thought that anyone else was a more capable leader than Shk. Tamim. And the whole country got behind him in a split second. The whole country I am telling you. And with the strength of the people behind him, he grasped the situation and dealt with it so well. That 3 years on, I have to be reminded there is even a blockade in place.

Last but not least. Self sufficiency. The blockade has not been cheap. Qatar has had to finance a whole host of new projects to make us less reliant on others for our basic needs. And now when I go into a supermarket, I can buy vegetables grown in Qatar, chicken and eggs, milk, washing powder and a whole host of products produced right here at home. And this has made us stronger. Perhaps we were pushed into the situation. But boy have we come out of it well.

When the blockade ends, the whole region will be better off. The sooner it ends the better for all countries concerned. And in this time of world crisis, we seriously need to work together. I hope I am not reporting on the 4th anniversary of the blockade this time next year.

The Amir pledges 20 Million dollars to support the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.

The Education City World Cup Stadium is completed. Making it the 3rd tournament ready stadium for Qatar 2022.

Qatar is committed to fight ISIS despite the COVID-19 crisis, says our Foreign Minister.

And Dr. Khal says we have succeeded in flattening the COVID-19 curve. There is no significant surge in cases. And less people requiring treatment in ICU. He says that the preventative measures reduced the impact of the virus by a 75%.

Let’s take a quick look at the numbers for yesterday’s COVID update – Which shows 1,581 new positive cases. 1,926 recoveries and no new fatalities.

Active cases are now 24,228 meaning a decrease of 345.

That’s all for today, please take care, and I’ll see ya tomorrow.
