The Qatar News in around 60 Seconds – Saturday 4th July 2020

It’s Saturday 4th of July, this is the news in 60 seconds

I’ve just realized. That today is my anniversary. It was the 4th of July 2009 that I moved to Qatar. I had been for a visit in 2007. But I moved here 11 years ago today. It’s gone in the blink of an eye. Hopefully I’ll still be here for many years to come yet.

There’s no Qatar Tribune on a Saturday, so we are down to two English medium newspapers today. And like yesterday, very little news. So once again we’ll just do the front pages.

Starting with the Gulf Times. The Amir makes an inspection visit to the Salwa Beach Resort.

The 3.2 million square meter resort includes 115 villas and chalets, a 246 room five star hotel, an aquatic theme park, conference center, ball room, spa, yacht club and marina.  And there’s more… it also has a diving center, shopping center and lots of green areas.

I don’t usually cover international news in a Qatar review. But the headline ‘Corona virus surge casts pall over US Independence day’ caught my eye. In my 56 years on this planet I had never seen the use of the word pall. What’s a pall? So I binged it. And it turns out it’s a cloth spread over a coffin, hearse or tomb. Or a dark cloud of smoke or dust etc. But I don’t know which one is being cast by the Gulf Times over Independence Day.

There’s an online learning platform on its way for autistic kids.

And Qatari women are at the forefront of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

On to the Peninsula. Which also has the Amir’s visit to Salwa Beach Resort.

Qatar says that the International community should focus on the fight against COVID-19 and conflict resolution. During a high level United Nations Security Council meeting on ‘pandemics and security’.

I’ll cover yesterdays COVID figures in a moment. So we’ll skip that story. And they finish with; M7 to launch online group mentorship program for creative startups.

Now, let’s take a quick look at the numbers for yesterday’s COVID update – Which shows 756 new positive cases. A massive 1,986 recoveries and I’m very sad to say, 3 deaths.

Active cases have now dropped below 10,000 to 9,949 meaning a decrease of 1,233 in the previous 24hr period. The average reduction over the last 7 days is -949 active cases per day.

Hypothetically if that average continues, we would have no active cases of COVID-19 by July 14th. That’s just 10 days away. I repeat hypothetically.

That’s all for today, please take care, and I’ll see ya tomorrow.
